As a luxury country hotel in Ireland, we make the most of our idyllic rural location by encouraging guests to engage with the great outdoors and the various leisure activities nearby.
From horse-riding to canoeing the nearby Grand Canal, we provide easy access as well as tee-times to those seeking a luxury golfing holiday in Ireland.
In addition, we offer a full range of outdoor activities on site at Cliff at Lyons for team-building events, including archery, shooting and grass-karting events.
Golf
There are four excellent championship golf courses near Cliff at Lyons.
The K Club Golf Resort has two of Europeâs finest, designed by Arnold Palmer: the Palmer Ryder Cup Course and the âinland linksâ Smurfit Course, which between them have hosted hosted the 1996 Ryder Cup, 13 Irish Opens and the 2016 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.
Carton House has two championship golf courses, the OâMeara and the Montgomerie, designed by two-time major winner Mark OâMeara and the seven-times European Order of merit winner Colin Montgomerie.
Driving time: 15 minutes for the K Club; 18 minutes for Carton House
Horse-racing
The love of horse-racing and its related social scene is in Kildareâs blood.
Curragh Racecourse is the world-famous headquarters for thoroughbred flat racing in Ireland, home to the Irish Derby Festival, held in June. The course is about two miles long and horseshoe-shaped.
Punchestown is the home of Irish jump racing, where the Irish National Hunt Festival is held every April.
Naas Racecourse is the local racecourse, which holds flat- and National Hunt racing with about 16 meetings a year.
Driving time: 27 minutes for Curragh; 23 minutes for Punchestown; 20 minutes for Naas
Motor car racing
Irelandâs only international race circuit.
As well as car and motorcycle racing, visitors to Mondello Park can sign up to drive a Formula styled single seater racing car or a supercar on the track.
Teenagers who can drive a manual gearbox car can enrol on courses at the Pro-Drift Academy, and there are also adrenaline-filled options for corporate events and team-building exercises.
Driving time: 26 minutes
Hot-air ballooning
Lifting off from April to September.
Irish Balloon Flights provide spectacular views across the Kildare countryside as well as the stunning Trim Castle in County Meath, the largest Norman castle in the country, dating from 1173. Trim Castle was where âBraveheartâ was filmed.
Driving time: 40 minutes
Country sports
Why not try them all.
Falconry lessons and educational bird-of-prey visits can be arranged with Newgrange Falconry.
Archery lessons and clay-pigeon shooting are available at Abbeyfield Farm.
All these sports can also be arranged on site at the hotel (not clays, but air-rifle shooting), which is a popular choice for team-building events.
We can provide rods for coarse fishing on the neighbouring Grand Canal: trout, pike, perch and bream have all been caught here.
For fans of fly-fishing, salmon can be caught on the River Liffey, with ghillies and beats booked on request.
One such is Robert of Love Fishing Ireland, the fishery consultant and head ghillie at one of the great fishing houses of Ireland, who guides for novice and experienced anglers alike.
He can meet guests at Cliff at Lyons and take them to his Celbridge base to share his intimate knowledge of the Rye Water and River Liffey systems.
Driving time: 45 minutes to Newgrange Falconry; 20 minutes to Abbeyfield Farm
